Community Filmmaking in Southern Colorado: The Making of "The Strong Force"
The term "community filmmaking" captures the relationship between filmmakers and the community within which they have chosen to film. Particularly in tight-knit communities, community support has the potential to help filmmakers make films that would otherwise be impossible to make because of budget, access, or logistical support such as craft services or childcare. In turn, filmmaking that is embedded within a community has the potential to strengthen community ties and capture themes and stories that honor what is unique about the community. "The Strong Force" was a project designed to bring together filmmakers from the San Luis Valley and a wider community of valley supporters to tell a story about the values embodied by ranching families in Southern Colorado. In this panel, community filmmakers behind "The Strong Force" will speak to the SoCo audience of independent filmmakers and community supporters by sharing lessons learned about the benefits and challenges of community filmmaking.
